A Christmas Prayer

for Action

When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with the flocks, then the work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, to heal those broken in spirit, to feed the hungry, to release the oppressed, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among all peoples, to make a little music with the heart. And to radiate the Light of Christ, every day, in every way, in all that we do and in all that we say. Then the work of Christmas begins.

A Prayer About the True Gift of Christmas

The gifts I'd leave beneath your tree,

Aren't those that you can touch or see,

No toys meant just for pointless play,

But gifts to bless you every day.

The gift of friendship warm and true,

Is one that I would leave for you.

Good health and happiness and cheer

To keep you smiling through the year.

The gift of peace that comes from God,

With prayer to guide each path you trod.

And when your heart has lost its song

The gift of hope to cheer you on.

These are the gifts I'd leave for you.

Prayer to St. Jude

Most Holy Apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hope. Please intercede on my behalf. Make use of that particular privilege given to you to bring hope, comfort, and help where they are needed most. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven as I work with my challenges, particularly (here make your request). I praise God with you and all the saints forever. I promise, blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you. Amen.

Prayer Against Gun Violence

God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

we come to you burdened and grieved

by the evil and destruction of gun violence,

entrusting to your mercy

each victim of this horrific crime.

Father of mercies and God of all consolation,

who console us in our every affliction,

comfort the families and friends of each victim,

give solace to grieving communities,

and bring peace to anxious hearts.

O God, who show a father’s care for all,

pour out your gracious blessing

on police, medical personnel, leaders,

and all who are your ministers of mercy,

bringing them healing and peace in the face of this tragedy.

O God of peace, who are peace itself

and whom a spirit of discord cannot grasp,

nor a violent mind receive,

grant to those who are tempted to commit these acts

repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,

so that they may return to their senses

and escape the snare of the devil,

entrapped by him, for his will.

O God, author and lover of peace,

defend against every attack those who cry to you,

so that all who trust in your protection

may not fear the weapons of any foe.

O God, merciful and strong,

be pleased to banish violence swiftly from our midst

and to wipe away all tears,

so that we may all truly deserve to be called your children.

This prayer is found in the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' document "In Response to Gun Violence."

Pope Francis’

Prayer for Peace

Lord God of peace, hear our prayer!

We have tried so many times and over so many years to resolve our conflicts by our own powers and by the force of our arms. How many moments of hostility and darkness have we experienced; how much blood has been shed; how many lives have been shattered; how many hopes have been buried… But our efforts have been in vain. Now, Lord, come to our aid!

Grant us peace, teach us peace; guide our steps in the way of peace. Open our eyes and our hearts, and give us the courage to say: "Never again war!"; "With war everything is lost". Instill in our hearts the courage to take concrete steps to achieve peace.

Lord, God of Abraham, God of the Prophets, God of Love, you created us and you call us to live as brothers and sisters. Give us the strength daily to be instruments of peace; enable us to see everyone who crosses our path as our brother or sister. Make us sensitive to the plea of our citizens who entreat us to turn our weapons of war into implements of peace, our trepidation into confident trust, and our quarreling into forgiveness.

Keep alive within us the flame of hope, so that with patience and perseverance we may opt for dialogue and reconciliation. In this way may peace triumph at last, and may the words "division", "hatred" and "war" be banished from the heart of every man and woman. Lord, defuse the violence of our tongues and our hands. Renew our hearts and minds, so that the word which always brings us together will be "brother", and our way of life will always be that of: Shalom, Peace, Salaam!

Dear God,

Thank you that you make all things new. Thank you for all that you’ve allowed into our lives this past year, the good along with the hard things, which have reminded us how much we need you and rely on your presence filling us every single day. We pray for your Spirit to lead us each step of this New Year. We ask that you will guide our decisions and turn our hearts to deeply desire you above all else. We ask that you will open doors needing to be opened and close the ones needing to be shut tight. We ask that you would help us release our grip on the things to which you’ve said ‘no,’ ‘not yet,’ or ‘wait.’ We ask for help to pursue you first, above every dream and desire you’ve put within our hearts. — Debbie McDaniel

Loving God,

Help us remember the birth of Jesus, that we may share in the song of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and worship of the wise men. Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world.Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting. Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings, and teach us to be merry with clear hearts. May the Christmas morning make us happy to be thy children, and Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus' sake. Amen.

A Mother’s Day Prayer

I said a Mother’s Day prayer for you

to thank the Lord above

for blessing me with a lifetime

of your tenderhearted love.

I thanked God for the caring

you’ve shown me through the years,

for the closeness we’ve enjoyed

in time of laughter and of tears.

And so, I thank you from the heart

for all you’ve done for me

and I bless the Lord for giving me

the best mother there could be!

Easter Grace Blessing

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with us this day. May this meal be blessed as we gather to celebrate together. May your love be shared amongst us as we enjoy the gift of fellowship. May we remember to give out the grace and forgiveness that you have freely given us. And may we always give thanks for your sacrificial love. Amen.

Dear Lord, please be our guiding light and strength to show us and our country the path during these uncertain times.  Be our shepherd to keep us together without falling apart with the chaos and bring us more closer to God with peace and love. Let our worst fears not conquer our vision to see the good from the bad.  Let us become stronger in our faith and as a nation with more unity, respect, and compassion.  Lord, hold us tight and bring us back from the ashes into your greater renewal with glory and light. Amen.
